Canada Must Be Broke

Cost of the Sponsorship Scandal™: At least $250 million

Cost of the Gomery Inquiry© to figure out the Sponsorship Scandal™: About $80 million

Cost of the painfully early General Election thanks to the political fall-out from the above: In the neighbourhood of $150 million

Cost of the handful of wreaths various Canadian Institutions laid at the Grossbeek Cemetery monument in Holland to commemorate the Canadians killed in the liberation of Holland at a ceremony that the Prime Minister, nor any other Member of Parliament attended for political reasons: My guess is about $15 each

The Dutch really showed us up, given they are the liberated and us the liberators, so they have reason to show gratitude but that is what the 20,000 tulips a year are for. The Queen of Holland laid a wreath that looked more expensive than all the dozen or so wreathes that the Canadians laid. It was a beautiful giant wreath of white roses with big blue silk ribbon with the Queen's Coat of Arms. Other than the Governor General's all the Canadian wreathes were standard issue fake poppies, glued on fake orange maple leaves, glued on astro turf. It was a terrible sight. And an embarrassing one too.

Keep on Trangling,
Anthony Pereira
