Today I made an interesting discovery. I have the best job in the world. Despite the fact that I missed out on what was an amazingly beautiful Sunday, it was 32 degrees today (90 fahrenheit for anyone living in the dark ages) and not a cloud in the sky, I came to this realization as I began watching a second Gene Wilder film while on the clock.
The pay might be a pittance, but I'm not asking for a career right now. I have no family to feed, and my expenses are quite limited, so I may as well take the easy way out. Sundays are a great day to work in the movie rental business. I think in the 7 hours I was there I helped 3 customers. All I did was sit on the counter and watch films, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Little Rascals, Son of the Mask (belch!) and Young Frankenstein, to be exact. Sure I had to get up to put away a couple arm loads of returned DVDs, but with televisions all over the store, I missed little. It would have been even better if I had a closing shift, at night we're allowed to choose movies of a slightly more scandalous nature.
So that was my observation of the day. In a related note, Degrassi Junior High Season Two is available to rent or own Tuesday June 14, GO ZIT REMEDY!
Keep on Trangling,
Anthony

I want your life.
Nah, I'm sure you don't. The job may be all glamour and free rentals, but everything else is fairly mediocre.
I LOVE Young Frankenstein - and I paid a hideous $40 just to own the DVD. I love Cloris Leachman saying "Ovaltine" and "he was my boyfriend!"
I wish someone would pay me to watch it you magnificent bastard, I salute you!
I did a currency conversion and apparently that's $37.75 CAD. Wow. That's $30 more than I paid for it. The next time some whiney customer complains about the price of something I'll just let them know about the "Australian Incident" as your situation will be henceforth known. Hearing that I'm sure they will not only beg me to forgive their insolence, but will also pledge to name their firstborn Loz.
What can I say, it's true devotion. Some of us seem to value the Gene-ius of Wilder more than others... hmm?
End of cheesy joke post.
Finally, the world (well, Canada at least) will bow down to me!
Question: Are DVDs always so expensive in Australia, or is Young Frankenstein a special exception?
Well... I happen to think most of them are too expensive. Usually new release ones can be anywhere from $30 - $45 depending on how much they think people loved the movie. Most of my DVDs I buy on sale for about $20 or $25. If you're REALLY lucky you can find the movie of your dreams on sale at the supermarket for $12.84.
You're really getting fleeced. $30 CAD is about the most a new release DVD costs here. Most are about $20-$25. We've been getting a lot of DVDs in strategic two packs (Dawn of the Dead + Shaun of the Dead) for about $20-$30 total. I buy my DVDs used... scratch that, "Previously Viewed" from work for $7.50 each.
You wouldn't believe the 2-pack I saw yesterday - Titanic with The Day After Tomorrow.
HUH?
i would love to work in a video store -- i'm such a movie junkie. i never rent in the 'new release' section because i'm always renting from my list of backlogs.
i love movies with 80's tracks, or anything by mel brooks.
mel brooks is my hero!
blazing saddles, genius
spaceballs, funniest movie ever!
and I pay 18 dollars for new releases, 10 for previously veiwed, and 5 dollars on walmart special..
Nam- If you're a fan of the 80's and goofball hilarity, you might enjoy "Wet Hot American Summer." It's a fairly recent movie that takes place at a Maine summercamp in 1981(i think). The ensemble cast includes Janeane Garafolo, David Hyde Pierce, Paul Rudd, Christopher Meloni, Molly Shannon, and Amy Poehler. I guarantee you'll laugh so hard you'll break multiple ribs, so long as you can get over the horrible technical qualities associated with such a low budget film.
lil red-Given the current CAD/USD exchange rate, you're getting a better deal than me, but so long as I don't have to pay the Australian Highway Robbery type prices I'm satisfied. Having worked at Walmart I know the kind of stuff one can find in that bin, although I once did score a copy of "The Wiz" with Dianna Ross and Michael Jackson from it.
Wet Hot American Summer is great - we had it on pay TV a couple of years ago and I think I watched it just about everytime it was on.
Nam: I just got 'Pretty In Pink' for $13 at Target. I love John Hughes.
thanks for the recommendation (re: "wet hot american summer" - i've not heard of it, not a surprise, i've been in a culturally-devoid cave).
you guys pay way too much for DVDs .. during the dot-com, i bought them for about $1 (oftentime, less) per DVD. here's how the scam worked: DVD normally went for $15-25 each; however, it was easy to use (and reuse!) e-coupons valuing $10-20 (sites sent them to you, or you can go to aggregate sites to find the coupons).
also, most sites at the time didn't care if you used competitor's 'ecoupons' (they were looking for customer loyalty, completely back-fired). though most had free shopping, some included this in the final charge, but was ofset with the multiple ecoupons. so, where are these online DVD sites now? six-feet under, no surprise.
i must have gotten some 400 DVDs this way. that's how i switched from my VCR to DVD collection.
